What is a bunion?
A bunion is a bony lump that forms on the side of the foot. According to an article published in the Pharmaceutical Journal, 23% of people aged 18-65 have bunions. Just in the UK, that equates to over 15 million people.
How bunions form.
Many people have foot types and soft tissue structures that make them predisposed to get a bunion. Despite this, one of the biggest causes outside of degenerative joints and gait, is wearing shoes that are too tight or too pointy.
Understanding when you have a bunion.
There are signs to look for when checking for bunions. These include:
〉 The position of your toe – it may have started pointing towards your other toes.
〉 Hard or swollen skin. It could be red or darker than the skin surrounding it.
〉 Pain along the side of bottom of your feet. This is usually worse when wearing shoes and walking.
〉 Changes in the shape of your foot or the other toes.
How we can help.
When looking for footwear to ease pressure on the joint and stop it from becoming worse, there are a few things that we recommend to help.
〉 Wear wider fitting shoes.
〉 Wear shoes with a more forgiving forefoot.
〉 Find footwear with good support at the midfoot and under the arch.
〉 Find footwear that can fit your orthotics in well.
Your toes will move forward and spread outward whenever your they begin to bend, so footwear must have enough space to accommodate all that movement. We have tagged our footwear, so that you can find footwear for bunions on our shop page.

While traditional training shoes have a linear, segmented sole design, the Metaride sole is built on a curve. It has been designed for runners to reduce the energy used throughout their calf muscles (back of your lower leg) by 30%. This reduces the amount that your Achilles has to recoil with every stride, so it allows the whole tendon and the muscle to rest for longer while being active.
At the Asics Institute of Sport Science, multiple rounds of testing revealed that the Metaride shoe increased runner efficiency and lessened the effect of fatigue. Runners described the feeling of an endless, easy ride—creating a more comfortable long-distance running experience.
